Old Stone House

Rutgers Master Gardeners work at the herb garden of the Old Stone House. The herb garden of the Old Stone House (circa 1730) was taken over by the Master Gardeners in the fall of 2003. At this time it was surrounded by caution tape and full of poison ivy. It was determined the most practical course of action was to begin from scratch (a few plants were salvaged to be planted at a later date such as the Lady's Bedstraw).

A tremendous effort by the volunteers cleared and prepared the gardens. The Herb Garden consists of five planting areas. To date the kitchen and medicinal gardens have been planted. In addition the outside of the fence and area around the fence and sign have been planted with various perennials and herbs of the era. The village is no longer used on a regular basis so it was determined that the beautification should be visible from the road.

Most of the plants have been donated to this garden by the Master Gardeners. The Master Gardeners have spent many hours designing, planting and maintaining the gardens. This group of Master Gardeners recently received the Presidents Volunteer Service Award.
